Uneven Heating Solutions in Drexel Hill, PA

If you notice that some rooms of your home are much warmer or colder than others during the winter, there are a number of different factors that may be responsible for your uneven heating. Having uneven heating in your home can be incredibly frustrating, but it is also an extremely common issue. Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to determine the cause of the problem and how best to fix the issue.

Have Your Ductwork Inspected and Sealed

Damaged or leaking ductwork is one of the biggest culprits behind many uneven heating problems. Your ductwork is essentially a closed system that’s designed to carry warm air from your furnace to every room in the house. However, any air leaks in this system can cause much of this warm air to escape before it reaches its intended destination. This drastically reduces the efficiency of your heating system and makes it much harder for your furnace and blower to provide adequate heat to every room. As a result, the rooms at the farthest ends of the ductwork tend to receive much less heat and be colder than those that are closer to the furnace.

Having your ductwork professionally inspected and sealed as necessary can eliminate this issue. Duct sealing ensures that your duct system is free from leaks and makes it easier for the warm air from your furnace to reach and evenly heat every room in your home.

Make Sure Your Vents Are Clean and Not Blocked

If you notice that one of the rooms in your home is much colder than the others, one of the very first things you should do is check the vents and registers to make sure there is no furniture or anything else blocking them. It is also a good idea to regularly vacuum out and clean your vents and registers to prevent them from being clogged by dust and debris.

Change Your Air Filters Regularly

Your furnace filter is designed to trap dust and debris both to prevent damage to the furnace and keep these particles from being spread throughout the home. However, the filter can quickly become clogged, which can drastically reduce the efficiency of your heating system. The result can be similar to leaking ductwork in that the rooms near the end of the system don’t receive nearly as much heat. To prevent this, simply remember to change your air filter every one to three months.

Have Your Furnace Inspected

Many uneven heating problems are also related to issues with the furnace itself. Any problems can decrease the efficiency of the furnace and thus lead to inadequate heat in some rooms. This is especially common for problems that cause short-cycling, which is where the furnace shuts off before completing its heating cycle. When this happens, the result is that the furnace doesn’t run long enough to provide adequate heat for every room in the home. Therefore, it is always a good idea to have your furnace professionally inspected if you have problems with uneven heating.

Check That Your Attic Has Sufficient Insulation

If your attic doesn’t have sufficient insulation, this could also be the cause of your uneven heating issues. Having proper insulation in all parts of the attic helps prevent heat loss, whereas having inadequate or uneven insulation could be the reason why some parts of your home stay warmer than others.

Consider Upgrading to a Zone Control System

For larger homes or those with multiple levels, a zone control system is often the best solution to deal with uneven heating. These systems allow you to separately control the heating for different zones or rooms in your house. In this way, you can prevent your heating system from having to run overtime, and you’ll also ensure that the warm air is directed to the rooms or parts of the house where it is needed. While installing a zone control system is not necessarily a simple or cheap task, it can be a great solution to help you overcome your uneven heating issues for good.
